Hiring Staff Based on Ability

When conducting a job interview, there will be multiple things you are looking out for. One of them is likely to be how good a fit the person is for your business. Another will be their ability. Whilst it might be easy to associated ability with the experience that someone has of the exact job you are hiring for, this isn’t always the most productive way to hire people. Someone can have a natural ability to do a job, without having the exact experience.

This can be harder for you to asses in an interview, but it’s possible if you ask the right questions. You could ask how someone would approach the kinds of situations you need them to deal with, and ask them to solve problems similar to real life ones. This will show you how they handle situations and give you an insight into their levels of intelligence. Don’t assume that a lack of experience means a lack of ability.

Training on the Job

With the prevalence of internships and apprenticeships, it’s becoming more common than ever to train on the job. They are available across many different job sectors, offering manual hands-on work right through to office roles. You will often be able to gain a qualification for your efforts. It’s a brilliant way to get into an industry.

You don’t necessarily have to start from scratch to learn new skills at work, however – a career change can often be based on many of the current skills that you already possess. Many employers value experience, even if it isn’t in the exact same field as you currently work. For example, if you can prove that you have worked with a wide range of people and can handle deadlines and a little bit of pressure, these are real-life skills which employers will recognise. Previous experience in the workplace shows that you’re able to apply yourself to new tasks and learn new skills, so don’t be put off from applying for jobs just because it’s not something you have exact experience of. They’ll often be looking for someone to fit into a pre-existing team, and if you can show that you’re able to do this, they’ll be happy to teach you new skills along the way.

If you’re looking for your first job out of university, college or school, again don’t be put off by your lack of direct experience. Many employers are happy to take on new graduates. Show that you’re enthusiastic and emphasise how well you were able to learn whilst in education, and this will get you a long way.

There are a lot of things which have become essential to businesses as our dependence upon computers has grown, but arguably the most important s Microsoft Office, and specifically Microsoft Excel. Some of this can be a learn by doing process of learning, but this definitely has its limits, while an excel training course can open up a huge range of functionality, helping you to; resolve complex problems, analyse massive amounts of data, and come up with money saving solutions.

Excel training can be conducted for free, but this does generally mean a more limited support structure for people who’ve signed up to a course. Paying just a small fee can include a lot more structure and one to one support from experts in the package you’ve acquired.
